Hmm ... me too! :-)

I love them. I agree with your point, Ellie, that they're great to use in a blog title almost as a way of saying 'This is the title ... now go read the rest of the post'. I think they also serve at times to mark moments when you're perhaps signalling to the reader that they might pause to think about what has been said. I think language is fun, and things like ellipses allow us to play with language, tone and style. Anyone critical of our use of them should lighten up a bit and hit the full-stop key a little more often themselves.

Actually, I think at least some of my ellipses are legitimate. I often omit the end of a sentence if it is obvious what it is going to be. For example, in the "If I counted the bodies too..." above the ellipsis is indicating that I've missed out "there'd be even more".

I think most of my other uses are at the end of paragraphs, where a full-stop is the right thing to use but for some reason I want to leave it hanging. As if there might be something more coming, but actually there isn't...

At least, that is how it seems to me now that you've made me think about it. I've never made a conscious decision to do that - it has just happened that way. I do it in emails too...

I wonder whether ellipses are being adopted by bloggers as a way of linking blog entries that are often just trains of thought... Almost like the way we would say 'erm' to fill a gap whilst speaking although of course with typing you have the luxury of pausing to think about what you type before you say it but maybe it's nice to show your train of thought...

For me the ellipses is saying "This is the title of my blog..." and the blog entry is what qualifies me writing that title...

Any other bloggers with a fondness for ellipses...??

I have the same bad habit...

20% of the *titles* of my blog entries have dodgy ellipses in them, and that's just the titles. If I counted the bodies too...

And I think I'm getting worse. The problem wasn't so frequent on the entries of a few years ago. Is blogging giving me bad grammar? Or am I just getting old?

You don't have the latter excuse...!

Ha ha - I have just realised that references to (Butler, 2008) are producing the sunglassed smiley emoticon... but I think I will leave it as it is for a bit of colour and amusement...

I so know how you feel! My CIPR CRT essays have taken over my life and I've had to say no to anything that remotely resembles fun until I hand them in. May is going to be the best month ever - I've planned lots of treats to reward myself for my efforts. Keep plodding on my dear, the pain will be over soon enough.

Hi Robyn, thanks for your comment - it's nice hearing from someone in the same CRT boat! Like you, I have pretty much written off April but am looking forward to a fun May to make up for it! I have noticed a bit more traffic to my blog recently and a rise in people searching for "blogging and public relations theory", "public health campaigns, ethical propaga" and "cipr assignment 2008" so there are lots of us out there! Good luck with your assignment and let me know how it goes...
